The world of men’s grooming is filled with… questionable advice. It’s a toxic swamp of locker room rumors, outdated stereotypes from our dads’ generation, and a whole lot of nonsense that just needs to die. As a professional in this field, I’ve heard it all. The hesitation, the misconceptions, the weird questions whispered like you’re confessing a crime.
So today, we’re taking out the trash.
It’s time to tackle and debunk five of the most common Manscaping Myths and Men’s Grooming Myths once and for all. Let’s get this straight.
Myth #1: “Grooming Isn’t ‘Manly’ / It’s Only for Gay Men.”
The Reality: This is the oldest, most tired piece of toxic nonsense in the book. Let me be crystal clear: my client list is a cross-section of the entire Chicago area. I see straight guys, gay guys, married guys with three kids, single guys, professional athletes, construction workers, doctors, you name it. Caring about your hygiene, your comfort, and your appearance isn’t “gay.” It’s “grown-up.” The idea that neglecting yourself is somehow a virtue of masculinity is a ridiculous concept we should have left behind in the last century.
Myth #2: “It’s All or Nothing—You Have to Be Hairless.”
The Reality: Absolutely not. This “all or nothing” thinking is what scares a lot of guys off. Grooming exists on a spectrum. Maybe you like having chest hair, but you don’t want it connecting to your beard. Maybe you just want to reduce the bulk so your back doesn’t feel like a sweater in July. “Manscaping” can mean a precision trim just as often as it means a full wax. The goal isn’t to look like a hairless dolphin (unless that’s your vibe!); the goal is to achieve the look you want. It’s about control and personal style.
Myth #3: “The Hair Will Grow Back Thicker and Darker.”
The Reality: This is biologically impossible, and it’s amazing this myth has survived so long. Shaving cuts the hair at its thickest point, creating a blunt tip that feels coarse and stubbly as it grows out, giving the illusion of thickness. Professional waxing, however, does the opposite. By removing the hair from the root, it not only lasts weeks longer, but the hair that eventually grows back is new, with a finer, tapered tip. Over time, many clients find their hair grows back sparser and softer.
Myth #4: “It’s Purely for Vanity.”
The Reality: Is looking good a part of it? Sure. But to say it’s only vanity is to ignore the massive practical benefits. It’s about hygiene—less hair means less trapped sweat and odor. It’s about comfort—no more chafing during a run or feeling like a furnace under your work shirt. Most importantly, it’s about confidence. When you feel clean and put-together, you carry yourself differently. That’s not vanity; that’s a powerful tool for your personal and professional life.
Myth #5: “DIY is Just as Good as Going to a Pro.”
The Reality: Can you trim yourself at home? Sure. Can you also give yourself a haircut in your bathroom mirror? Also sure. But are the results going to be as good? Let’s be real. When you see a professional, you’re paying for expertise, safety, and a better result. I have the right tools, the right products, and the right angles to get places you can’t (safely) reach. There’s no risk of nicks in sensitive areas, no missed patches on your back, and no painful ingrowns from bad technique. You get a clean, precise, long-lasting result without the bathroom yoga and the “oh shit” moments.
Now that we’ve cleared the air of these Men’s Grooming Myths, you can make a choice based on facts, not fear. If you’re ready to see what a professional, no-nonsense approach feels like, I’m here.
